The backing is a polyester/cotton blend, a technology introduced 40 years ago to the abrasives industry by Sungold which gives the strength of polyester, but employs cotton yarns to prevent the stretching that can occur with all polyester backings.  While many belts will tear or shred from nails and staples, the weaving method employed by Sungold is extremely tear resistant.  

High temperature resistant resins are used to adhere the grains extending the belt life compared to other belts.

The backing is treated to create a moisture barrier allowing the belts to maintain their shape even when stored in high humidity conditions.
